Signs of spring

Dormancy is part of the natural cycle of things. Flowering cherry trees, not unlike lots of other spring flowers, require a cold season to initiate a resting phase. That period of darkness is essential for the tree to preserve itself and build up its energy stores.

And because nature always knows exactly what to do, the tree’s cycle aligns with the depths of the bitter cold. Once it’s aware that the worst of the winter has passed, it eventually begins to form its tiny flower buds.

We’re also not immune from the need to rest and rebuild. If you’ve been feeling like hunkering down lately, it’s all part of the natural cycle of things. Rest, restore, and listen to what your heart, mind, and body are telling you they need—so that you, too, can open up and blossom when you’re ready. Today is the first official day of spring, and the buds will be here sooner than you think.

Xoxo,
Kristen

Petals & Proportions

Inspired by the designs of architect Luis Barragán, the 2025 Orchid Show at the New York Botanical Garden explores the vibrant theme of Mexican Modernism. Celebrating the juxtaposition of the intricate beauty of orchid blooms and bold, colorful structures, the exhibit intentionally blurs the lines between nature and art.
